The tour focuses on the Hollywood strip area, and takes advantage of Southern California’s Mediterranean climate with travel by foot. We begin at the corner of Hollywood and Vine Streets, one of the most celebrated intersections in the American cultural imagination. The parking lots of Hollywood also reveal often overlooked but nonetheless significant elements of both culture and nature, in timeless balance. For example, one increasingly important cultural construct on display is the ubiquitous security camera, which, along with security lighting and warning signs, symbolizes the modern problem of keeping car parks controlled, safe, and insulated against litigation. Representing nature in this environment, your tour guide will explain the parking lot ecology of pigeons, which are credited with causing millions of dollars in damages to parked cars every year. Without the manpower to rid these open spaces of pigeons, and having to contend with local residents who enjoy feeding the birds, the pigeons bring a peaceful element of the wild into the Hollywood environment. Our guide will entertain the group with comical real life stories of failed pigeon control campaigns in Los Angeles dating back to 1923.

The tour continues with a walk past the Sunset Vine Tower, the tallest building in Hollywood once given a featured role in the 1974 classic thriller film Earthquake, for which our tour guide will deliver a plot summary.
